Original article and dated context

Every year, we like to look back on the year that was, celebrate the impressive achievements in the world of disability, and reflect on what's changed. We long for the day when this is just the norm, but we’ll be here doing our thing until the day arrives. Besides, we like the holiday tradition.
This year, we feasted on a smorgasbord of sporting triumphs and real-world representation on our TV screens, came to grips with the new NDIS, and so much more. So, let’s get on with it: let’s celebrate 2024!

Sporting Glory: Australia’s Paralympics Success

Let’s brag a little. Australia shone on the world stage at the 2024 Paris Games, clinching ninth spot on the overall medal tally with a beautiful 18 gold medals. Our nation does love some sport, with too many late nights to count. Worth it, though.
We featured some of our favourite moments from the Games with our Paralympic series, featuring the likes of Tim Hodge, Curtis McGrath, Dan Michel, and Emily Petricola. You can check out our series here. Well done, Team Australia; you did us so very proud. What was your favourite moment?

TV Shows: Best in Class 2024

ABC has delivered the goods this year, with two stellar shows that portray disability in the right way. Better yet, both feature people with disability authentically representing themselves, without some able-bodied actor ‘cripping’ things up. Welcome to the future, folks.
The first is the feel-good comedy Austin, starring Michael Theo of Love on the Spectrum fame. Theo stars as the eponymous Austin, a neurodivergent 20-something who tries to reconcile with his father, a best-selling children’s author. A brand-new season is already in the works, arriving this year.
The second is the documentary series Headliners, which follows singer Elly-May Barnes’ quest to create two bands made up entirely of musicians who are living with a disability. It’s insightful, fun, and features MC Wheels, one of Tristram’s mates. Check it out for some quality tunes.
Dylan Alcott always said representation matters and it’s true – we love seeing people with disability on our screens!

The Federal Government makes big changes to the NDIS

We brought you all the NDIS changes as they happened, with big, monumental things introduced to the scheme throughout 2024. We know it’s been daunting but rest assured that these changes will take some time to implement.
Following the NDIS Review, we saw the Federal Government change the Act, introduce a NDIS funded supports list, and propose the NDIS Navigator. Undoubtedly, they’re big-ticket items, with the intent to make the scheme ‘sustainable’, but uncertainty remains.
If it’s all too much to take in, we’ve got you covered with our ongoing webinar series for participants. You can watch previous recordings or register for our upcoming sessions. Led by our resident NDIS expert Tristram, they’re a great place to know what’s coming.

What are you looking forward to in 2025?

That’s 2024 done and dusted, so what are looking forward to most in 2025? We’d love to know! Drop us a line to share your goals or resolutions. But in the meantime, we’d like to wish you all an amazing year, filled with happiness and success.
