NDIS funding and budgets: what your plan can cover

NDIS funding is easier to use when you understand what your budget covers and how regular supports draw on it. Knowing the amount in your plan is only the starting point. You also need to consider which supports are eligible, how your funding is organised and what your commitments will cost over time.

This section brings together articles about understanding plan budgets, comparing costs, understanding funding categories and working through questions about spending. Some explain the difference between a disability-related support and an ordinary expense. Others look at what happens when circumstances change or funding is not being used as expected.

For participants, a useful first step is to list the services you use, how often you use them and the costs you have agreed to. Include any additional charges you need to understand, rather than looking only at an hourly rate. Ask for an explanation of an invoice or quote if the details are unclear.

Families and carers can help organise this information with the participant's agreement. A plan manager can assist with financial administration, while a support coordinator may help connect spending decisions with how supports are arranged. Ask each person what their role covers so questions reach the right place.

NDIS funding must be spent on eligible NDIS supports and in line with your plan. A provider's recommendation or a plan goal does not, by itself, confirm that a purchase can be claimed. Check the NDIA's support guidance before committing to an unfamiliar cost.

Budgeting is an ongoing task, especially when your schedule or support needs change. Use the articles here to prepare questions, understand the terms being used and keep track of the support your funding is paying for. Clear records and regular conversations can help you spot a problem while there is still time to respond.
