Self-managed, plan-managed or agency-managed NDIS funding?

NDIS Plan Management Options: Which Is Right for You?

How participants can compare the work each option leaves with them

Think about the records, invoice decisions and budget checks you are willing and able to handle, including any help you want. Self-management can involve different payment and claiming sequences, not only paying first. Check the self-management responsibilities.

If you want help from a plan manager, ask how reports and invoice queries will work. Whatever option you choose, keep the support rules and your available funding in view.

The original comparison graphic is a summary, not a service promise. Self-managed and plan-managed arrangements can usually use unregistered providers, subject to service-specific requirements. Defined supported independent living and NDIS digital platform providers entered mandatory registration arrangements from 1 July 2026, with transitions; check the Commission’s current rules. NDIA-managed supports require registered providers. Self-management leaves financial records with you, plan management provides financial administration, and agency management pays providers directly. Digital tools and advice vary, so the graphic’s “manual”, “limited” and “high” labels should not be treated as fixed entitlements. See the current mandatory registration requirements.

NDIS Plan Management Options: Which Is Right for You?
Every NDIS participant faces the same decision when deciding how to manage their  NDIS funding: Should I be self-managed, plan-managed, or agency-managed?
The answer really depends on your situation. Each option comes with different levels of control, responsibility, and support. Understanding the differences can you help make the right choice for you.
The three ways to manage your NDIS funding are:
  • Agency–managed: The NDIA manages your NDIS plan and pays providers directly. You have limited responsibility.
  • Self-managed: You’re in full control. You find providers, submit claims to the NDIA, keep records and manage your budget. This comes with the most responsibility and admin.
  • Plan-managed – A registered plan manager handles the financial admin for you. The responsibility is shared between you and the plan manager.
You can choose one option, or mix and match across different parts of your plan.
NDIS Self-Managed vs Plan-Managed vs Agency-Managed
When deciding which option to choose, it can be helpful to compare them side by side.

Text description of the original management comparison

The graphic compares self-managed, agency-managed and plan-managed funding. It says self-managed and plan-managed arrangements can use unregistered providers, while agency management uses registered providers. For payments, it shows the self-manager paying and then claiming, providers claiming from the NDIA for agency management, and providers invoicing the plan manager for plan management. It places administration with the self-manager, NDIA or plan manager respectively.

The graphic labels self-management tools and advice as manual or limited, agency-management tools as limited and advice as high, and plan-management tools and advice as high, sometimes with an online portal. These are simplified labels, not guaranteed levels of service. Self-management can use more than one payment sequence, registration exceptions still apply, and participants retain responsibilities under every option. Read the practical comparison in the editorial update.

How to decide which option for managing your NDIS funding is right for you?
Deciding on a NDIS Plan management option is a personal choice. You should consider:
  • The time you have for additional admin work.
  • Whether you would like to use unregistered providers, for services where this is allowed.
  • How important budget flexibility is to you.
  • How much responsibility you are comfortable taking on when it comes to audits and compliance with NDIS rules.
Many participants choose plan management because it lets them stay in control of their NDIS funding, without having to manage the financial admin themselves. A plan manager takes care of that for you.
How to switch to plan management
If you’re currently self-managing your NDIS plan and thinking about switching to plan management, it’s good to know that the process for switching is simple and often happens all within one day.

[Clickability update, September 2026: A one-day switch is not guaranteed. Request the appropriate funding arrangement with the NDIA and confirm the actual plan and provider-record steps before assuming invoices can be processed. Read the current plan-management process.]

Here’s how it works:
  1. Choose your plan manager: Look for fast invoice processing, a user-friendly portal, and a team that's easy to reach when you need them. If you choose MyIntegra you can sign up online, call the team on 1800 696 347 or email choiceandcontrol@myintegra.com.au .
  2. Call the NDIA on 1800 800 110: Request for “Choice and control” to be added to your plan. This is a minor administrative change, not a reassessment.
  3. Endorse your plan manager: Call the NDIA on 1800 800 110 (or your LAC), and advise who you have chosen as your plan manager.
  4. Your plan manager takes it from there: They'll get you set up in their system and begin processing invoices.

[Clickability update, September 2026: The required process depends on your current plan and requested change. Do not assume every request is completed as a same-day administrative change. Confirm the steps with the NDIA.]

What families can check before taking on administration

Agree who will do each task and what happens if that person is unavailable. Consider how the participant will see spending information and approve decisions in a way they can use.

Keep the participant’s preferences separate from a provider’s marketing claims. Ask the actual manager about support hours, payment stages and security arrangements rather than assuming every provider offers the services featured here.
